I am considering buying a 37.5 that has a Engine Driven Generator (2.5KW). Does anyone have knowledge of these? Are they practical to run A/C while motoring? Dothey have problems? I haven't seen this on ther boats. Can this be mounteed on the 35.5 we currently own? I would appreciate any info. Will

I've seen...

2 boats with engine driven generators, a 35.5 Hunter and a 34 Catalina, and both were "down" at the time for repairs. Both these boats were offered for sale. My main impression was the extra wear and tear on the primary diesel. Installations were so, so...involving cutting out part of the front engine cover and building an "extra" step at the bottom. Big concern is the rpms needed to spin the generator enough for decent output. I guess I figured if this was a good solution, we'd see a whole lot more of them out there!

What Honeyman says is true.

But by 'engine-driven', are you refering to a seperate 'genset'? You know, the self contained kind with their own seperate motor?

Engine Driven Generator Clarification

Thanks for reponse. This is mounted on the side of the 38hp yanmar diesel and is supposed to be like a big alternator.
