Objectives:
1) Determine and experience the rate of snap-roll and snap-righting moment of this boat with no mast/boom.
2) Determine the speed of boat at various engine rpm’s.
Snap-Roll/Righting Moment
Winds were light and water had a slight to no chop. Centerboard was up and never deployed. Sought out large boats producing large wakes in busy channel. Tested various angles to large wakes; off beam, off quarter, off bow. There is no way to quantitate the snap-roll/snap-right and therefore the results are highly subjective.
Conclusion: I personally saw and felt no difference in the behavior of the boat between the mast up and no mast. I’ll admit I was expecting rather violent upright snaps from the rolls created by the large wakes but I didn’t experience that.
Boat Speed per Engine RPM’s
The waterline length of this boat is 19.58 feet therefore the theoretical hull speed is 6.823 mph (5.929 knots). This is a new engine that had never been run before today. Per the manufacturer’s break-in procedure, I ran the engine at idle for the first 10 minutes, and no more than half throttle for two hours. The engine was never run over 4000 rpm’s.
Tested in a secluded creek with winds 0-5 knots, water flat.
Idle 1140-1180 rpm 2.1 mph
1500 rpm 2.6 mph
2000 rpm 3.5 mph
2500 rpm 4.4 mph
3000 rpm 5.1 mph
3500 rpm 5.8 mph
4000 rpm 6.3 mph
Conclusion: The boat/motor combination seems to like 2600 rpm which is 4.5 mph. I was hoping for a minimum cruise speed of 5 knots (5.8 mph) at approximately 2500 rpm’s but it looks like it’s going to take 3500 rpm’s to get that.
