How much water should an original 1980 12HP inboard Universal diesel engine be spitting out the back of a Catalina 30?

not very much...

you probably mean the Universal diesel 5411 raw water cooled 11 hp diesel. If you have a temperature gauge, make sure the temp stays at 155 degrees maximum. Its hard to judge how much water is supposed to come out - you just get used to seeing it. It is sporadic and a few seconds will pass before it spits out the water. Not much goes through it. I am probably no help to you whatsoever, but if you can find someone at your marina with a similar engine, ask them to fire it up for you to compare! Good luck -Rob

5411 engine cooling

We have the 5411 engine in our 1983 Cat 30. People always point out the small amout of water spurted out as an indication of poor water circulation and cooling. Compared to most other boats, it is a small quantity. However, my engine never gets above 140-150 degrees, which is correct for a raw water cooled engine. This has been this way for over 15 years, including sailing/motoring down to the end of Baja from the central coast of CA. Just pay attention to the engine temp. Also, many 5411s shoot out some steam (white) which is normal. Some things to watch are the impeller and exhaust riser. The impeller should be checked yearly and the riser can clog up after 7-10 years. A visual check will show clogging, but our engine just would not increase RPMs. Easy black pipe fix though. Good little engine, just keeps going and going. We plumbed the sink to the engine water inlet (with valves) to flush it with fresh water after use.

impeller note

you probably have an oberdorfer pump and impeller. Check and they can tell you what the pumping capacity in gallons is. Use the other info from below and this for troubleshooting.
