Hi all, I've got another one for you. The engine control/throttle on my Westerbeke 10two likes to get stuck in gear. The control works as follow. Pull the plunger out and your in neutral. Depress the plunger and go down your in forward. Depress the plunger and go up your in reverse. The problem is sometimes the plunger gets stuck and I can't get the boat out of gear. The cables are smooth and unit works fine sometimes. Also, it seems to help when I pull the entire unit out a bit? Any suggestions, comments?

Same boat, same problem

Rich, I also have a 272 (1986), same engine. I also experience the same problem from time to time, and usually find that if I shift into gear, forward or reverse, and then back to neutral, I can then pull the know out, disengaging the transmission. I'll be anxious to hear if anyone has any good suggestion to address this more dependably. Lou

What Plunger?

Hi Lou and Rich, I also have 272LE with same engine but can't follow what "plunger" you are refering to. My 'LE has an Edson set up with two controls, a throttle lever and separate gear lever. While the throttle can get a little stiff from time to time it does not effect the gear shift. Curious as to what the "plunger" is? PS.Lou are you still down at the Anchorage, we stayed there in June but did not see your boat.

I've moved out to a small yard off Old Road Bay

Brian, I am now in Young's Boat Yard on Jones Creek. Much closer to the bay and quite a bit cheaper than the inner harbor area. Sorry I missed you. The "plunger" I'm talking about is on the throttle/shifter control which is mounted on the starboard side cockpit well. My boat is not an LE and this may be the difference. It is wheel steered, but someone else on this bulletin board suggested to me that the wheel might not have been original to the boat. The pedestal/wheel is a Yachting Specialties unit. I do have original documentation from O'Day showing this style throttle/shifter, so if not original, than a soon after purchase option from the dealer. Basically, it consists of one lever that is in neutral when it is horizontal. As Rich said, when pushed downward you are shifting into forward, and when pulled above horizontal it is in reverse. There is a black knob in the center of the control hub which allows you to disengage the transmission so that the engine can be revved without turning the shaft. Hope that clarifies it.

Okay, I understand!

Okay now I understand, this control is quite different to the 'LE. Had something very similar on an outboard many years ago. Sorry I can't give any help. Lou, enjoy the remainder of the season, we will be coming down the Bay during first week or so in Oct. during our community cruise. Regards.
