I would like to know if it is unusual to not have some form of venting for the engine compartment. I have just purchased a 1985 Hunter 28.5 and I notice there is no such vent; the engine is surrounded by sound deadening material and the only chance for the heat and fumes to escape is through cracks where the "woodwork" does not fit tightly.

How is the engine expected to get fresh air and I expect that if the air in the engine compartment is not vented, the fumes just end up in the cabin.

There is a two vents at the back of the upper cabin . That what my hunter has.

I have a Hunter 310 and the AFT berth after running the engine always has a distinct and annoying smell for some time after. I have fans running to push the oder out. Still not real happy however.

No venting on our '85 H'31. There is plenty of air from the surrounding area. Some of the newer boats have blowers that are used to evac. hot air.

Dawno- perhaps the smell is that oil leak you mentioned elsewhere mixing with the drip from you packing gland. I don't keep the aft qtrberth cushion in place and I pull the packing box cover back about 3-5 inches to help air and cool the engine compartment.

You could add a blower to help vent the heat and smells.
My 2001 and 2007 Hunter both had exhaust blowers to do all of the above.

I, too, have a H28.5 (1986) which has no noticeable vents for the engine. I have never had a problem with either fumes or the engine getting enough air. Keep your air cleaner/silencer clean, your fuel clean and water free, your impeller and oil and filter changed at regular intervals and you should be good to go for looooong time. Join the H28.5 group and check out the many post there. Good luck with your boat!

I think there should be blowers to control temperature after the engine is off.. in fact I bought one recently but have not installed it yet. However.. the engine itself moves a lot of air just breathing.. A diesel operates "unthrottled" so for every two revolutions it moves its displacement in raw air into the box.. soooo at 2500 rpm, that is 1250 displacements per minute; the 2 GMF has a displacement of 35.7 cubic inches, so that is 44625 cubic inches per minute or 25.8 cubic feet moved through the engine every minute. That is about half the flow of a good sized bathroom vent will move.
