Thanks for all the contributions in this thread. I have learned a lot and added to my maintenance checklist. My Volvo Penta M2001 overfills the engine compartment and is a pig to work on. And there is no room to fit insulation, so it is unpleasantly loud. But it does seem reliable. Now I have some hope I can reduce the smoke. Thanks again.
