Sorry for all these “simple” questions. Just got a cat 27 and need help
Here’s a video
1) Has the engine belt too much slack?
2) a drop of clear liquid (greasy water at touch) falls every 45 sec or so
thx!!!

You are right, too much slack in the belt. The leak is the seal in the pump and there may be a kit to replace it. The belt may have been over tightened, causing the seal leak and that could have caused the slack belt now. I would buy a replacement pump, fixing this one as a spare, but sometimes the seal seat is too worn and the kit won't help.

I believe that is an Oberdorfer pump. Typical pumps have two seals one for oil wher the pump connects to the enging cover and a second on the water side. There is a drain hole between the two. These pumps can be rebuilt. There is a tool that you make out of an allen wrench to remove the seals- cut the short end to allow the wrench to pass the seal diameter and grind a sharp edge with a relief on that end. Sorry, couldn't find the picture. You probably will need a new shaft as well- i would consider a complete rebuild= carbon bearings, seals and shaft

Yep, way to much slack. You should be looking for 1/2” play in the belt. You see this a lot in older belts.
There are fairly inexpensive gauges available to measure belt tension, you put in place, while you tighten the alternator. And if they are not loosened during long winter haul outs and not allowed to get the strain off them, they develop memories. That causes uneven vibration and can lead to pump damage.
You can try rebuilding the pump, as a spare, but best to get new. And loosen the belts if planning a long duration of non use. You’ll get years out of your belts that way.

There is no way I can do that.
Dunno why not. You've been given two excellent links with photos showing How To Do It. As I mentioned in my link, the first time I, too, was scared, so bought a new pump! Most expensive choice...

I just don’t have that tool.

this Sail La Vie step-by-step isn’t helping much TBH. Unless I missed it I don’t know what the breakdown of the parts so I can’t see the order of things, and he inserts…. Not super clear.
but I get what you say. After doing more research I understand we re “
just“ removing sealers and putting new ones, the challengen being to remove and replacing

And here is the instructions

The steering wheel puller is available at autostore for a reasonable price, $ 13.00. I originally bought it to remove the boat steering wheel. With this device you can precisely insert the seals. Removing is very easy.
PM me if I can help

thanks so much!!!!!
The video was perfect.
One confusing part is the need of the modified allen key. I don’t see at which it would be used in the video. Do I need one?

The video was from the manufacturer and is NOT a good way to do it. After you watch the video then read the comments that follows it.

I did, thx for the warning.
however I fimd it strange to use WD 40 to help inserting the seals when they have loctite on theor walls?

I am not sure where you read to use WD40 to insert the seals. I use lanocoat instead to lubricate, as mentioned in my content.

it was in the sail la vie link provided earlier. A comment:”A more successful method of installing this bearing is to apply a slow steady pressure and heavily lubricate it (WD-40) while it is being inserted”
