I had my mechanic do some work on my almost 2 year old 310.My water pump was leaking so he replaced it. It is sad that the pump packed it in after 2 years. I do have 147 hours. He then told me that the engine is out of alignment. I talked to the dealer and he said that on a new boat the alignment should be checked after a year of so of launching. The engine will get out alignment because of the stress of the rigging on the hull. This can cause wear in the strut bearing and cutlas bearing. This is the first time I've heard this. My feeling this alignment should be done by the dealer as part of the breaking in of boat like the firrst oil change on a new car.

Just do it!

You are out out Warranty, why didn't the mechanic just do it then? It's not a big job, it's your boat now.

My experience

Roger The annual haulout & stepping/unstepping the mast, if you do that, can also throw out the engine/transmission - prop shaft alignment. Any time the standing rigging is tuned, too. These are events/actyions that can induce minor stresses and warping of the hull along the longitudinal axis. I had a cutlass bearing wear out because of that hauling/stepping/rigging cycle. It's much cheaper to pay for an alignment check/adjust each Spring than to replace the cutlass bearing. Even cheaper if you are qualified & have the time to do it yourself. --RonD
