End of season....

Well, the fat lady sang. I ended my sailing season a few days ago by hauling down the sails, winterizing the engine, and generally getting the boat ready for haul-out next week. It was a good sailing season for me and I hope it was for you, too. My log notes 45 days aboard in the 8-month sailing season here on the Chesapeake (and only one day of no winds). How does that compare with the rest of you sailors?

Somewhat better sailing on the Bay than on Lake Michigan. My boat went into the water Memorial Day Week and came out two days after Labor Day. Winterized and covered that week! Had some great sailing, but several days of either no wind or else too much. At least we didn't have to tolerate the several days of 100 degree plus temperatures in VA.

The fat lady must be working her way up to Annapolis, but she's not here yet. I'm still hoping for one more day of sailing. There was a January 2nd that I sailed in 70-degree sunshine and I have the hope for one more of those freakish days. In the meantime, I'm working on our club's boat for the parade of lights the 11th. I'll probably be on the boat for the parade, so I'm sure that event will convince me to finally winterize my own boat.

Great season for me as well! But she sang 2 weeks ago, now lying on the hard at McDaniel's on the North East. All buttoned up and ready for anything, well hopefully not 4' of wet snow.

Although the weather is cooling, relatively, here in So. Nevada we sail all year round. We spend a lot of late evenings on the lake in the summer where temps are still 100+ at midnight and the water is around 80. The wind blows here in some form 300+ days a year. Only down side is the lake is drying up due to the ten year drought in the southwest. Hope will spring in the spring. Good Wintering.

not far behind you - fresh water system has been emptied for weeks now but just went ahead and winterized the engine - just in case, haul out at Herrington North is not till 12/20 so I will get out (if under power) at least once more to get there. Then winterize again. It's what I get for wanting "one more of those freakish days" instead of pulling out sooner. Hope to see some of you out on the bay next season!!

Our season started in late august this year. That is when we bought our new boat. I had the mast unstepped today and we are sitting cozy in the middle of a snow squall right now.

April to October, 49 days

I had the boat in from April to mid October this year. I got in 49 days of sailing and at least a half dozen days were windless. It was pretty hot in Ohio this year, but it was all good. I already miss being on the water.

I'm up here on the hard with Witz since the first week of November (when we had to vacate our club's docks). Winterization done, all storage items brought off and snug in closets/attic at home. Visitation tomorrow to see how the tarping has faired with all the winds we've had in the past few weeks.

Was on the boat almost every weekend all summer and racing on another boat each weekend. The clock shows only about 24 hours of use this summer, attributable to two long weekend trips with either no wind or wind on the nose. IT WAS STILL A GREAT SUMMER!

I enjoyed the last Fall series race today on my Catalina 250. It was cold enough to wear a parka with a water temperature of 60º. Afterward I plugged in a Battery Tender and put a little electric heater in the cabin as a precaution against freezing temps in there until about the first of March. I made sure the dock lines were all in good shape. Next race will be in March but I'll check on the boat on the occasional pleasant days. My across the dock neighbor is a year round live aboard so he lets me know if my boat needs attention.

Since the winter comes in “pulses” here (a couple/three days of winter followed by 70F for a few days), there is sailing.. Boat is in the water, ready to go when I am. Busy getting Christmas stuff ready right now, but probably will be at boat a couple of days next week.
