How do you all treat the end of the lines in your running rigging? (Actually, I guess this could be for any working lines) 1) Whip them (with marline or waxed twine)? 2) Dip them? 3) Just melt them? 4) Heat Shhrink 'em? Or, some other way or even a combination of methods? -Smitty

All of mine get

Two sewn whippings about four diameters apart. That way if one should fail it is backed up by the second.

Combination

Sheets get heat sealed (butane butt splice) the double whipping as Ross described. Halyards get a single whipping with a loop for a tag line. For lines that don't heat seal well, a backsplice does a nice job of finishing the end. Halyards get a reeving eye in the backsplice for tag line.

It depends

For halyards, I have a messenger loop put on them. For control lines, heat sealed then a single wipping with dipping to protect and maintain it. CVP

Is a backsplice in [double] braided

just an eye splice with no eye? -Smitty

Double Braid Backsplice

Yes, basically a zero diameter eye splice. For halyards, I trim the core back a bit and do a small single braid eye for the tag line. Here's a link for the back splice:

For those that haven't

sewn on whippings be sure to select the cordage for the whipping in an appropriate size for the line. You will need much smaller twine for 1/4 inch lines than for 5/8 inch lines. If the twine that you use is too large then the whipping will be larger than the line size and may be difficult to reeve through the blocks.

Back Splice

Back splice in stay-set is sooo nice. A good beginner splice. Fidilicious.

Interesting that nobody

uses heat-shrink tubing. Fabulous stuff and quick/easy/tough.

Chris, with a palm, a needle and a small spool

of waxed twine there are many things that you can do that nothing else will do as well. You can also make it fancy besides functional. What else are you gonna do while you wait for spring?

For Chris...

I experimented with electrical-type of heat shrink tubing as a whipping alternative a few years ago. I found that with lines that live outside on my boat that the heat shrink got dry and brittle after a few years in the sun/UV. Is there a heat shrink on the market that is UV resistant?
