i will pose the question again. i do not like mid boom sheeting and would like to bring the lines aft to where i can handle the main sheet from behind the wheel. has anyone had any experience in bringing the lines aft with turning blocks and what ever configuration in necessary. i want to single handle it and i have a problem in a rough blow to leave the wheel and let out the main while i gibe or even go down wind. i would appreciate any advise .

Where do you put the Traveller?

Ok, so where do you plan on putting the traveller? In front of the wheel? You won't be able to open the cockpit lockers. Behind the wheel? The mainsheet will always be hitting the helmsman. At the bridge deck? It will be difficult going below, but may be the best bet. This will replace one problem with another and may not be all that easier to reach from the helm.A better solution is to make sure you upgrade to a new Garhauer straight traveller if you have the old curved one and a new set of blocks to reduce the effort. It will still be a reach if you single hand, but add an autopilot and you can fiddle with sail trim while Otto steers.

I agree with Gene....

I agree with Gene, the main sheet will just clip the skipper in the back of the head if you attach it to the transom. Even if you attach it to a single point in the center of the cockpit floor, like some smaller C&C's, you'll have the sheet crossing the seats and decks, and it still will be out of reach. Invest in a auto pilot and upgrade your mainsheet blocks and traveler. Also service the mainsheet winch to make sure everything is as friction free as possible.Good luckRichard

Run the running rigging aft

I have sailed single handed for years. Yes, it is easier with an aft boom mainsheet control. With my Cat 30 I just stand in front of the wheel and can control all sails. It takes a little getting used to but it works. You could lead the mainsheet aft with a couple of blocks and relocate the winch. That way you can keep the traveler in the same spot and reduce some of the cost. I like not having the traveler and mainsheet in the cockpit when not sailing. Good luck with your project.

Aft is fine if you dont mind getting hit by it

I just took the stock system out of my cockpit and put it mid boom. I put a Harkin system in with 3-1 control blocks and ran every thing aft. I also ran the main sheet aft and secure it to a clam type cleat. It is within reach and can be released with a flick of the sheet. The cockpit method took up too much room and was in the way.
