Where to go

It's a Catalina. Catalina is still in business. Why not try Catalina?

Emergancy Tiller

Jim: Stu is probably right - try Catalina or Catalina Direct. This is for Catalina owners out there that have not tried their emergancy tiller in a practice situation. It is a small, stubby little thing but it won't work with the wheel in place. To try to loosen the wheel nut in a emergancy situation and find it is too tight to get off, especially if you have never had it off, is not a good idea. Take a few minutes the next time your at the dock and loosen the nut so your sure you can remove it should you have to in an emergancy. At least you'll know what size wrench you'll need and where it is.

Wheel Nut

The wheel nut on my Cat '30 was pretty much corroded on. (the boat is new to me) So I removed it, cleaned the corrosion and applied some anti-seize grease to the wheel and installed a quick release nut that I bought from Edson. The 'nut' is a round one built to go on and off by hand. Now removing my wheel takes 2 seconds. (better safe than sorry!) I also bought a mounting piece to mount the wheel on the safety rail on the back of the boat. Now when I'm moving around in the cockpit and am not going anywhere, I mount the wheel on the back of the boat and that frees up a LOT of room in the cockpit. Don't remember the cost...I think the nut/mounting piece combo was $90. The nut itself is $40-45. Jim
