emergency tiller

My 30' TR lacks any emergency steering tiller. I can fashion a circular end to fit what appears to me to be the ermergency tiller connection in the cockpit beneath the aft lazarette, but could use some help on the shape (bent up forward of the wheel?) or does one remove the wheel to use the emergency tiller and, if so, shape/length?
