I have a 1976 H30 but it has no provision for an emergency tiller. Has anyone added one? Also if anyone has a 76 H30 with provision for an emergency tiller then could they let me know know and preferably attach some pics!

thanks

It could be that the '76 H30 is different from what you will see in the archives.

But this subject came up some years ago so there are some threads here:

One of these posts references a page in the Edson installation manual. See page 9:

On my H37C there is a cap on the coaming over top of the rudder post. If you remove that cap you find a rudder post with a cross brace welded inside. The emergency tiller is simply a cup that is notched to fit inside the post and over that brace. Mine has a flat handle about forty inches long. It lives inside my nav table.

I have spent hours going through the archives, but no one seems to have covered the adding or an emergency tiller. The boat I have has no provision for one at all. I carry a spare steering cable, but would prefer to add a tiller.

It's not always obvious...

how the manufacturer installed the emergency tiller. What type of boat do you have?
I know my first boat had the emergency tiller stored under the Vee birth locker under a bunch of stuff because the PO did not know what it was. I looked at it and almost threw it out.
The hole in the stern that it went in was advertised (by the PO again) as an inspection port.
Once I got it figured out it still looked weird being canted at a 45 to the actual rudder alignment.

Good luck

Here is a picture of an emergency tiller for the h30. Maybe you can manufacture one. I made one for my h33 out of pipe.

Going to my Boat Today - I'll Take Pictures

The diagram Paul F posted looks th same as the set-up on my Cherubini designed 1980 Hunter. I'm going to my boat today. I'll take pics (and post them tonight) of the emergency tiller and the rudder post into which it fits.

When I first went to check the operation of the emergency tiller that came with my pre-owned boat, I was surprised that there was no means to attach it to the rudder post. There was no hole in the post in which to insert the through-bolt. (This probably because the rudder assembly had been replaced in the early 1990's according to a maintanence log that had been left on the boat. Need for an emergency tiller arrangement apparently was missed.) Refer to the pictures. I have modified from the (presumed) original because when I did drill a through-hole in the post, and then attached the tiller through the large hole in the center of the tiller's bracket, I found much too much free play. So I drilled the top hole in the bracket at a size that better matched the diameter of the bolt. This improved the free play. But even at the dock, trying to align the heavy tiller (it's made of 1/8" steel) so as to insert the bolt through the rudder post holes was not easy. I thought maybe attaching the tiller would be much too time consuming in a real emergency on a rocking boat and with the rudder ocsillating. Adding to the challenge is that its not possible to actually see when the the holes line up. To improve, I cut out open-ended channels at the bottom of the tiller's bracket and drilled a second through-hole in the rudder post. The tiller can now be successfully aligned by first dropping the tiller's cut-out channels over the lower bolt. The upper holes in the bracket and the upper holes on the post then line up so the upper bolt can be inserted.

Was on board today doing some preseason work, double checked if nothing else it appears Islander, my 77 has no provision for an emergency tiller.

Plan major deck work next year might consider some sort of access at that point.
