Emergency Tiller S2 9.2C

I recently purchased a 1987 S2 9.2c and can't find any sort of an emergency tiller set up. I did find a piece of aluminum that seems to plug into the top of the rudder post below deck however it would be imposible to navigate the boat from that location without someone above deck calling heading corrections.

Does anyone know if these boats had some sort of emergency tiller arrangment that I may be missing?

Our 1986 has that aluminum piece. You would need two people.

In my spare time (who am I kidding?) I have thought about looking at how I could rig my emergency tiller so I could operate it solo, since I solo sail a lot. Of course you guys are REALLY screwed from the sounds of things. I suggest carrying a spare cable set with you or learning to control direction with your sails, which is possible but required practice. I certainly can't do it. Alternately you can build yourself a nice periscope!

You could always extend the tiller up through the rear cabin hatch or roof but it would need to be removable.

Through the aft hatch with an eye or eyes on the top rigged to some snatch blocks to the toe rail with the lines forward to the cockpit seems like it may have potential.

Captain Calypso, I had the same idea. Perhaps making a cross beam support that would fit within the confines of the rear hatch opening with some sort of bushing to support an extension that would plug into the rudder shaft. I have not checked the alignment of the hatch with the rudder shaft to see if this is doable.

Did I note on an earlier post that you made mention of looking for soft spots on the bulkheads of these particular boats (9.2c). If in fact that was your post could you please elaborate on the exact areas you were talking about so I can check mine out?

The top of the bulkheads go first. Water leaks in chainplate area and gets to the two 3/4 inch plywood pieces that make up the bulkhead. One was so bad I coul put a screwdriver through it. I took it down about a foot and grafted a new piece on.

OK, your talking about the chain plate bulkheads. I did notice that I have one that needs attention on the port side of the boat for one of the lower shrouds. I was going to look into making that repair this summer. I note that the chain plate has what looks like a deck plate with some sort of red rubber gasket under it where it penetrates the deck. The gasket material looks a little questionable.
Did you find a source for replacment gaskets?

If you have any pointers on how to make the bulkhead plice repair I would appreciate hearing them. Did you mechanicly make the splice with hardware or just mat and resine or a combination of both? What type of replacment material did you use? I would say the top two to three bolts in the chainplate are what's compremised on mine because the rot seems to be in the top 3-4 inches of that bulkhead.

I really appreciate your sharing of knowledge and experiance with your boat.
