I'm wondering whether an emergency tiller came standard with the Catalina 320 in 1995 or thereabouts. I'm taking possession of my new 1995 over the weekend but unfortunately the previous owner is away so I have no idea whether I'm likely to find one on the boat. Thanks. Eric cle

My 1994 C28 came with one.

Although I'm the second owner it looks like something which was included when the boat was new. It is a several piece "T" bar contraption which breaks down and fits in a nylon stuff bag. It's not something that most people would remove from the boat so it's probably stowed aboard somewhere. As I recall, the owners manual material makes reference to the operation and use of the emergency tiller, so the boat likely came with one. Good luck.

On my 94 C270 it's a 3 ' or so long, heavy

ass piece of ~2" steel pipe, with a woefully short piece of 3/4 solid rod that goes into whole in big pipe. It's in blue bag stuffed into port lazarette cause that's only one long enough. If the previous owner put the little pipe inside the big one so it can roll, it's the thing that goes THUMP everytime the boat tacks on a nice breezy day. Just for a chuckle the following is exact copy of my "Owners Manual": ~ EMERGENCY TILLER: It is recommended that the skipper and crew become familiar with the emergency tiller and its use. The emergency tiller is stored in a red bag labled "Emergency Tiller". A dry run of the system will minimize confusion in an emergency: 1 .Locate the emergency tiller. 2 .Remove inspection port cover in the cockpit sole aft of the wheel. 3 .Assemble emergency tiller. 4 .Remove steering wheel with wooden wrench provided. 5 .Insert the emergency steering tiller in the top of the rudder post. NOTE:The emergency tiller moves the whole steering assembly, including cables and quadrant. These components must be free to move in order t@ steer the boat.
