What do you carry for food should you not be able to return to port as you had planned? How long could you remain at sea without reprovisioning?

Survival kit

For my 25th anniversary at work I got a survival kit (ironic but fitting!). It takes up about 1 cubic foot, came in a duffel bag, and has food and water for two people for three days plus medical supplies, light packs and other survival gear. The water is in pouches and the food is in bars. We keep the kit in the car during ski season and the boat during sailing season.

Till the Beer and Booze are gone!

I sail on a large lake and would never get stranded at sea, but I have been stuck on the other side a few times. With no reefer aboard I always keep some Pringles and smoked oysters and cheese in a can aboard. Plenty of liquids too.

Lots of stuff thats out of the way

Cereal bars, cereal, pasta, canned foods, parmalat milk, bottled water and foods that can be left without refrgeration. In the fall I remove all of it and bring it home to eat in the winter and restock every spring with new stock This season I'm including stuff to make corn bread and muffins cause I found baking pans that fit in my galley oven. Never gave it a thought about how long this food would last Good topic Ross

'Bouta Week...

...mostly soups of a variety. I have enough booze for a couple of months for myself; a lot less depending on crew *o Maybe I should rethink my priorities. In fact, I'm glad you asked. It reminds me to fill up the freezer that now just has ice in it. It works better full anyway! The only reason I have as much food is that I go down for days at a time and would rather eat aboard than go out all the time. When seriously cruising, my wife does the provisioning and does a great job. BTW, we have a pressure cooker aboard that gets a real work out. Rick D. PS another reason is that we have had to evacuate to the boat three times. One EQ and two fires. So, we always keep about a week's worth of food, water, clothes and supplies.

Thanks for the great responses. Some things to consider.

you can't make muffins without baking powder. Bacon left in the refrigerator unwrapped will dry out and keep without refrigeration. It won't be fresh but it won't rot. We keep flour, oat meal , corn meal, several jars of canned meat, canned fruit and veggies, noodles, pasta, red sauce, milk powder, onions, vitamins, coffee and tea. salt pepper, baking powder, baking soda, ( good for heartburn ),nuts, raisins, onions, snack bags of variety, and almost as important extra rolls of toilet paper and several bottles of wine. The receipe for pancakes and muffins is almost the same, pancakes use more liquid. Butter will keep for 2 weeks without refrigeration, sour milk can be used for cooking if you add a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda for each 1/2 cup. Shredded carrots will substitute for eggs in muffins. Sea water can be used to boil potatoes or pasta, just don't add salt. edit to add: and sugar. ;D

...and Another Thing, Ross...

..I have learned from experience to keep about ten days of medications aboard the boat. Your point about using salt water for boiling is excellent. We do, and used to use it all the time for dish washing too, except with this boat the dealer talked me out of adding a salt water spigot. I'm sorry I didn't and will correct that some day. I had one on all the other boats. I'll bet half of our water is used washing dishes, which is stupid on the face of it. Rick D.
