Spam

Once we were meeting another family for a lunch hook rendezvous. I didn't realize that I was suppose to pack both packages of hot dogs for both families. We happened to have a can of SPAM on board for "emergencies". I sliced it and grilled it with the hotdogs. You know its really pretty good grilled! To this day one of the kids that was there always asks for grilled SPAM if we see them at the lake. And I always keep a can on board!

I just checked

found a couple bottles of water and 3 cans of catfood, (the admiral's lobster bait), I guess we wouldn't starve, but we might start clawing the furniture *yks Tim

MRE's

MRE's. My boy got a 12 pack from Armysurplus.com for a mountain climbing trip and I gotta say they are pretty darn tasty. We ate more than half of them just screwing around at suppertime. At over 2000 calories each they sure seemed like a good thing for the boat so I'm getting another dozen for that. They are supposed to keep for 3 years so what doesn't go during the season doesn't matter. Just don't eat the white gum! It's a dierretic, yellow gum is OK. They should come with directions!

Canned Whatever

I keep canned meats and veggies on board. Coffee and wiskey, though the wiskey is for times at anchor only! If I dont get back to the marina with in 2 hours of high tide either way, I get to anchor out for a while usually for a nights good sleep. I guess we could all keep hard tac and mahogany beef on board.

Now, if I were reduced to having to eat Spam, that would really be an emergency!

We usually carry...

Spag & meatballs for a backup meal. But we could stay about a week with the other types of backup provisions that we carry. Canned tuna, chickem, soups in case it gets cold. But most of our regular meals are planned around the grill.

In addition to canned foods rice, pasta, noodles

and flour for quick breads will make the difference between survival and just camping out.

Always some food aboard

It would be different if we were sailing bigger waters but here on the lake we just keep things like soups, coffee ,hot chocolate and canned tuna chicken etc. This is in addition to food brought aboard for the trip. We tend towards canned food because we don't want to attract rodents and raccoons. At another marina a boat was broken into by a raccoon that did a lot of damage and wasn't too friendly when he was evicted. There are mouse traps on the dock but we haven't had any rats or mice so far. I think that the marina is just putting them out to make sure that there is no mouse problems as no one has mentioned having mice on board. We have considered MRE's but they are not very tasty. Last Saturday it was cold and raining a little. It really felt and tasted good when the wife brough out a couple of coups of hot soup...then later some coffee.
