• Sailing is all about the Weather.

Big into the exploration of Atlantic Hurricanes since Katrina came uninvited into his world, James (Jim) Gurley (JamesG161) has followed every Tropical Storm birthed in Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean waters since. Being a boater, he knows that we often need more time to prepare than we get from the TV weather folk. Jim relies on the science of storm development to share early warning info with friends and fellow boaters.

Early in 2018, Jim and John Shepard, (JSSailem) started to chat about the weather data available. John asked Jim to help forecast Pacific NW storms, and this morphed into discussions on weather forecasting.

For John, sailing in the PNW is sometimes hit and miss. One day is ugly, then a string of beautiful days but no wind, followed by a series of blue-sky days and 12 knot breezes. Being ready for those great sailing days means you need to look to the Pacific Ocean and what is brewing. John has been into Pacific NW Weather since the 1970’s when his first PNW November storm hit bringing more than 40 days and 40 nights of continual rain.

Together we want to share information, new APPs, safety, and thoughts about letting the weather help you. Identify some of the resources for sailors and help prepare you for your next sailboat outing.

It is far better to go out on the water knowing what to expect in weather terms, than to be out on the water and see dark ominous clouds suddenly appear, unprepared.

Embrace the freeze.

I was given two legs. Why constrain them together on one "ski". Boarders spend half their time on their arse. Its taken me 50+ years to keep off my arse. Never skate boarded so its all foreign to me. Rented my son ( 8or 9 years old) a board one day so he could try it. Came back a couple of hours later and found him sitting near the lifts crying. Put him back on skis and all was good. He never let my grandkids board. We all ski together (except I stay out of the woods while the kids explore).

I grew up skiing in Vermont. When I turned 58, I told my wife I couldn't ski another inch. She too grew up skiing in VT, but she had gone to the dark side with my son a few years before.

So the board was a new challenge. I took it slow as I'd seen too many people my age, ending up like your son. :)

Anyway, that was 11 years ago. We ski on a small mountain on the coast of Maine. That mountain became the Mattahorn the day I strapped on a tray, and it gets scarier every season!

Our son, his mom and I last year. We have a return to winter starting tonight. Very exciting as the 'base' is concrete.

While a bit early to declare LaNina... This is still coming as a result of last years current. The conditions here are classic.

Today.... SNOW... No boat painting today... Another day closer to sailing season.. Oh come on...
We need a break.

It's February in Central Texas. Earlier this month, we had winter. 28 degrees. Today we have summer. 88 degrees with single digit humidity. Go figure.

The La Niña currents continue to bring joy to the PacificNW.

The 2 plus inches that fell last nite have coated the trees, provided a wet easy packed snow on top of a wonderful icy base. Youth all over the valley are waking to that joyful sound... SNOW DAY...

So yesterday we were in the 80° temps near Norfolk and the local farmers were saying the strawberries were two weeks ahead of normal. At the local fish market the woman said they have enjoyed a better harvest this winter and possibly continue into the spring. I couldn’t resist the bay scallops especially when I made them with a cheese sauce poured over a bed of asparagus. The other boaters began complaining about the cooking smells wafting down the docks.
