Eliminate refrigeration water pump?

We slip in a dirty river and the filter on my refrigeration water cooling pickup clogs and causes ineficient cooling in less than a day or two. My question is, can the water pump be replaced by some kind of fan to cool the coils or is the water cooling needed at all. Could a switch be put on the water pump circuit and turn off the water pump? I definitely do not want to wreck the system. Thanks

Should be a switch.

Sorry to hear about your poor water quality. What type of boat do you have? One our Hunter 376 there is a switch located at the nav station (on the wall 90 degrees to the nav station to the aft, black rocker switch). I suggest that you use the switch to prevent burning out the water pump. Some background information. The word is that you don't need to cooling water until the air temp reaches 90 degrees or something in that range. However the temp in the enclosed area of the compresser reachs 90+ even when the temp is 70 outside. We find that using the water cooling works best, however you don't want to run the system dry and ruin the pump. Find the swith or if you don't have one, install one. Russell

John, do this;

First, find the brand name of the system. Then call them for advice. They will need to know some things about your system so be prepared to be told that a dealer will have to look at your stuff. Second, if you can't find a brand name, you will have to contact a marine refer tech, who knows what he's looking at. Very important. This type of problem can't be solved here on HOW. But don't fret, it can be solved. You just need to be in touch with the right people.

High Pressure Limit Switch

I don't think it will work as you have a tube with in a tube system. The raw water is removing the heat from the system. If your system has a high pressure limit switch you could close the thru hull and see what happens. I forgot to open the thru hull once and the limit switch shut everything off before any damage was done.
