I am in the process of buying a 30' Catalina. I am completely confused by what electronics will work with what? The boat has a Ratheon Tridata (depth/Speed). I want to add a chartplotter and apparent wind. Do I need to find intruments that are compatable with what is on the boat, or does that matter? If I need to be compatable, what do I want to buy? Thanks for any suggestions!

Look at the manual for you existing gear, it is probably nema 0183 compatible and possibly nema 2000. In theory other devices with similar compatibility should be able to talk to each other.
In the last year or so Practical Sailor has had a few articles on compatibility of different manufacturers NMEA components. Very informative.
