You got the good stuff then!! Bob Carver had differing lines and differing manufacturing points. His Japanese stuff was pretty good but IMHO lacked the warmth of his US made product especially in the preamps..
Yeah they're really great. sorry to side-track but I too am a recovering audiophile as you say. The sound is clear yet powerful, with no hint of distortion even at stun level, all across the frequency spectrum. And they still work, unlike other brands I've owned that are long ago recycled. I have old Speakerlab 7's that still sound drastically better than even today's marketed as high end stuff. They don't add any foreign sound to the music, they just delivery the notes with still surprising reality. They were true aficionados who built these things, instead of being only concerned with $.

This was true with many marine systems of the past, including the boats, sails (still are), instruments and electronics. Raytheon was a military supplier, hence the robust and serious nature of their marine gear I believe. Someone else mentioned military spec, and this is a valuable aspect of consumer gear if you can find it. I know this through many years buying and selling outdoorsman goods.

I mean, there it is in a nutshell. Simple enough to throw some abstract garbage opinion like, "Well, uh, I bet you your car has offshore parts".
Well Duhhhh.. Of course there is no escaping this entirely. Wearing loincloths and walking the streets barefoot is the only alternative. And of course I wish all me stuff was U.S. made, even though I technically am not either. But it never hurts to try. Not being that poor, cheap, or stupid, I always choose US when I can. And as Maine said, the consumer has spoken. And you get what you pay for typically. No doubt the buttons on the X5 control head REEK cheap. But to replace it with what, a sundial and abacus?
Yep, already too late. We have sold our soul. And have met the enemy. And it emphatically is within..

I would wish the OP the VERY best of luck in this dilemma, of which I have no particular answer. (Well kinda, but I ain't sayin' here). Better bone up on technology and services though, that's all that's left. Sort of..
Thank you. You and I are on the same frequency I think.

Model railroads on boats

Stu I'd like to see how you have your train set up in the boat.
The "station" is below the companionway, the mountain is the V berth, and the gondola cars stop on a siding that is under the stuffing box to catch the once-every-thirty-second drips. ;)

I guess I should also admit to using my 1960s turntable and my old Kingston Trio records, too. :D
