Electronic Engine Stop Button

We have a Hunter 36 with a push button engine stop for a 3GM30. We have had problems with the stop button on the panel in the cockpit working properly. When it does not work, we pull the cable on the engine. We recently discovered that there was corrosion on the connections in the engine room at the rear of the Yanmar. After cleaning this, the kill button still did not work. So, then we discovered a relay that was also corroded, so we cleaned it. Then everything seemed to be fixed. However, unfortunately, a spring fell out of the relay and we never found it. So we replaced it with another relay that we thought was the same type of relay from Auto Zone. The Auto Zone relay stopped the Yanmar, but the alarm did not sound when the engine killed. The alarm will come on with the manual stop, but not the Auto Zone Relay. After, many questions to many people, we now believe that the panel is Yanmar and the unit on the back of the Yanmar is Yanmar, but there is a cable with a relay between the engine and the panel which was added by Mastri for Hunter and has a Tyco relay. This relay is suppose to be industrial strength and is suppose to have two functions; the kill engine and the alarm. So, we have ordered one of these relays and hope that this will operate the stop engine function properly. If it does, Hunter has said that they have these in stock so that we can get a spare. Hunter indicated to us that these push button units have been around since about 2003. Has anyone else experienced this?

Redundant Systems?

No, the manual stop cable works for me. That doesn't make sense; the buzzer sounds when the engine is stopped because the oil pressure sender senses a loss of oil pressure, that is as long as the key switch is on. The buzzer should have nothing to do with the way you stop the engine, whether by a manual cable or an electric solenoid. Is the electric stop switch also interrupting the key switch circuit? Are the warning lights on the panel coming on? If they are not you are cutting power to the switch. I have heard of solenoids being used to replace the cable stops which tend to rust but to have a dual system seems like an overkill. Yes, the control panels used by Yanmar engines are a Yanmar part.

Fire Shut Down

I understand that the alarm is suppose to sound because when the engine kills ther is no oil pressure. The alarm is sounding when I use the manual shut down and it also sounded with the TYCO relay but it only shuts the engine fown with the Auto Zone relay and does not sound the alarm. The battery charge light appears on the control panel. I understand that the panel is Yanmar and the shut down is Yanmar but the relay in the middle is for the emergency fire engine shut down. So, I have ordered the TYCO relay and hope this solves the problem. The original relay beame corroded.

Wait 10 seconds?

The Mastri Yanmar dealer in St. Petersburg, FL told me that there was a slight delay in the alrm coming on after the engine shuts down. I went back to the boat and did note that the red battery light and the red low oil pressure light and the alarm all come on when you turn the key on before turning it all of the way over to sart the engine. In addition, after pushing the red button to kill the engine the engine kills and if you keep the key in the on position, the red battery light comes on immediately and then after about ten seconds, the low oil pressure light comes on and the alarm. We were not waiting long enough for the alarm to come on, so at this point, we have concluded that the issue is resolved and that the Autozone relay works the same as the TYCO relay.

Similar problem on a Jeanneau

I picked up your forum and question via a search for Yanmar engine stop solenoid. I have a similar problem with my Jeanneau Sun Odyssey - solenoid has failed to stop the engine intermittently over the last couple of weeks, paeticularly when hot (end of the trip). Then it packed in completely. We fiddled with it last night and it now it's working again, or at least worked 4 or 5 times in a row. At least I now know that it might be the relay and not the solenoid itself. The replacement solenoid is damned expensive. Hope you have you problems sorted now. Cheers, Phil

seadaddler - what's that cabinet for

I may have missed it when looking at other 36s, but what is that cabinet for at the nav table? Access pannel to something or does it have some type of hidden death ray joy stick behind it? *666

Bilge Valve????

If I remember right it's access to the bilge pump outlet which I never touch plus access to VHF and other electrical wires. It doesn't really any real purpose or storage except maybe some thing small and soft like paper towels maybe. I also checked the manual engine shut down today on the side of the engine and it works fine and the alarm works good no delay. Nick

Hot vs. cold oil

O.K. Now I think I have solved this issue. When stopping a cold engine (one that has just started up), the oil has not heated up and is thicker. After the engine has heated the oil, it is thinner. When starting a cold engine and not allowing the oil to heat, there is a delay with the low oil pressure alarm coming on. However, after the oil has heated up, then when the engine kills, the low oil pressure alarm comes on immediately. So, the relay from Auto Zone is probably O.K.
