I don't recall who suggested it (would like to thank them) but I bought a set of Chesapeake Bay sailing charts off Ebay. They load on your PC or laptop, transfer data to/from your gps(routes/waypoints)(can watch live track on laptop), are great quality, simple to use and very well priced. Also easy to print off the chart you need and take it to the boat unless you take your laptop. Search for: NOAA Charts They are called Waterworld Charts and are sold by the Chartstore. I tested there customer support by being a dumb user (a gift I have) and John was patient and very helpful. Good outfit, fine product. Got all the detail charts for the bay for under $50.00. Link to their site is below.

I use Garmin GSP for my Laptop.

I have been using Garmin 78 inconnection with my laptop. I use Maptect software and it's fun to see the little red boat go across the screen.

Handheld GPS Yes

nick, Yes you can use any GPS that has a nmea output. You must make certain that the NMEA ouput is compatable with the software that you buy. THe one I see most is NMEA 0183 ver x.x Fugawi is a good entry level software, reasonably priced at $99.00. All the bell & whistles come with the higher priced packages. You will also need to buy the electronic charts. I included the link to Fugawi below. Also, http://gpsinformation.net/ is a great link if you want to do some research on your own. Good luck, Mike D

nmea

So, if I set the interface on my gps to nmea, I should be able to plug it in with the program I have is Mapsource roads and recreation, and also waterways and lights.I should be able to watch it on my laptop down below. I hope these programs will work otherwise, I'll be purchasing too. I'm going to try it in my front yard here in a little while and respond back. Tim Welsh
