Survey said battery 2 was weak so I moved battery 1 to the 2 spot and put a new battery in the 1 spot. Boat has a charger and is hooked to shore power. I turned on AC main, DC main, and turned battery switch to "both". All other switches on the electrical panels are turned off. Shore power works because AC outlets work. After a week the indicator on the electrical panel shows the charge at 50% and much lower when I switch to battery 2. What's going on here? Could the charger not be turned on? There"s no switch for it on the electrical panel.

Charger

Our 290 has a dedicated circuit breaker for the charger. Surprised that yours does not. I would start checking to see if there is power there and how it is controlled. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije)

DC Switch

My charger charges whatever battery is /not/ selected on the DC selector switch. If had it set to both when Im at the slip and hooked to shore power, neither battery would be getting charged. Its the other way for alternator charging -- the battery that is in-circuit with the motor is the one that gets charged -- so 'BOTH' is a good setting while running motor. You may be wired different than me of course... Duane

I know your problem

I have a 1987 hunter 34. The charger plugs into a starboard side plug on my boat. If your starboard side outlets are not turned on at the electrical panel, you cannot charge the batteries. This is how mine is setup, I assume yours is the same.

Charger

The charger was not standard factory issue on the Hunter 34, so whatever you have was istalled by a previous owner. There is no uniform way to install a charger and it could be hooked up in any of several ways. It is obviously not working, and I suspect it is not turning on when the AC is activated. It may be on its own breaker, but may also be hard wired into any of the various AC circuits. This takes some investigation on your part. Good luck.
