The PO of my C-30 has a red wire that runs from the positive terminal in the battery bank to one of the chain plates and secured to it. Anyone have any idea on why this may have been done and what purpose he was attempting???

Don

sounds like an interesting guy

If you ever talk to him, please ask what he was thinking and post it for us. two possibilities comes to mind if the rig is grounded: either trying to fry the prop or light up the mast

Maybe he was an engineer for Lucas and uses positive ground?

Electron flow

as lightening protection??? Could drain any electron build up in the rigging into the battery. Really, though, how is the rest of the boat wired? is it conventional? Are the fuses/switches fed from a positive bus/post? Or is it all "backwards"? There is nothing wrong with a positive ground (earth) as long as everything is wired that way!

Eliminate it

until and unless YOU understand what it is there for, or find out from the PO.

Birds?

That's my guess. But, I'd sure have that wiring checked out before everything turns to dust... Rick D.

My vote is to take it off

There are some european boats which are wired with a positive ground but unless you find out a good reason to have it, I would take it out.

I would check all the rigging

at the top of the mast and the bottom ,maybe that red wire was supposed to be a ground and should have been black or any other color other than red and someone assumed it should be hooked to the positive battery terminal any way something might have fried like the screws, rivits or what ever now that the chain plates are battery positive and every thing else is battery negitive if it was bonded. Another thought is it was for an FM radio antenna, cause thats what I found on my old Bristol but that wire was laying next to the radio and the other end to the chain plate and it was black in color Oh and do cut that wire ASAP

Red might have been the only color he had.

Many times I have found the previous owners of vehicules have used wrong colors for wiring as that was the only color they had without running to the store. It's fine for them as them know the reason it was done, something the next owner doesn't. Ray
