I purchesed a 23.5 ( nice boat ) The previous owner installed a fuse in the negative cable between the battery and panel. He installed this fuse with a much smaller guage wire than the negative cable. Does anyone know of a reason, particular to the 23.5, that he would install a fuse in the cable? (disregarding the obvious error of the small guage wire in a larger cable) As far as I can tell the rest of the wiring is factory - no modifications.

master fuse should be installed as close to the battery as possible, with in reason. Going with a smaller wire induces a fuse in itself.

Not sure why he would fuse the Neg, you are sure it is the ground cable that is fused?

You should look at a Blue Sea fuse and holder with the appropriate size cables and terminations and fuse the correct side, replace this Neg stuff with the correct cable

It's my understanding all hot (positive) wires leading from the battery posts should have an in-line fuse as near to the battery as feasible. That way, if any piece of the wire (other than the hopefully short piece from the + battery post to the fuse) happens to short to ground, get in water, etc. the fuse will blow, rather than pulling enough current to cause a fire.

But, I am an amateur, so hopefully more seasoned hands will chime in.

Installation instructions for ProMarine Charger calls for a fuse between negative charger post and ground wires. Its was supplied with the charger

should still maintain the correct wire size and use an appropriate fuse, holder and terminations.
The OP says the fuse he has is between the main battery and the panel? Not the same thing as a charger..

Many panels have a Main DC breaker or fuse; check to see if you have one. If you do, I seriously doubt you need a fuse in that wire run. If not, I would replace with an appropriate wire size and fuse.
