The reason for the advise to use all GFIs is that the lead GFI only protects the circuit properly if they are chained properly. Since you can't see the wiring, many suggest simply using all GFIs.

In my experience you shouldn't use multiple GFIs in a chain because they fight and wont work correctly. I installed two, one on either side of my kitchen sink as i didn't realize they were on the same circuit and it didn't work. As i recall the upstream one kept tripping. Another piece of advice is that they should be tested and changed as necessary or sooner in a marine environment.

240v on a boat. That is pretty scary stuff, although i love 240v clothing irons when i travel on business.

I have not had that expereince; my prior boat had several chained, and I have pluged GFI multi-strips into GFIs without difficulty. But I can see it. In truth, the best answer is always to KNOW what the wires do.
