We bought Verboten, our 2001 Capri 22, this summer. The original owner had a starting type battery which he'd moved from the original starboard locker in the cockpit to the centerline between the portapotty and the compression post to improve balance for racing
We'll be doing more cruising than racing I suspect and I figured out pretty quickly that The Admiral needs a hot cup of coffee in the morning or things will be unpleasant for me. Both of the coffee makers she bought (110 and 12v) drew too much current for the starting battery (even with a beefy inverter) so I thought I'd double things up. I moved the starting battery back to the locker, put a deep cycle one I used for the trolling motor on our prior boat by the potty, and hooked them up in parallel (the wiring was already in place); I also added a solar panel (22.5w Sunsei) & controller. Turned out that running the batteries in parallel didn't work either, though I can't say I'm overly surprised given the power requirements of the coffee makers. That's not what I'm concerned about at the moment though . . .
The question is - over time am I likely to damage the batteries (or charge controller) by mixing types on the same circuit? Would I be better served and would the batteries have a longer life (before replacement) if I put in an off/1/2/both switch? Even if it won't affect battery life, would it make sense to put the switch in, especially if I'm considering adding an alternator to the outboard?
