Electrical and Electronics rebuild

My 450 made a trip to the yard to have the stick pulled and inspected along with a bottom job. Uh Oh! when set down on the blocks water squeezes out and I get an estimate of $2500-$3000 to pull the keel and reseat...crap , but gotta be done. Overrun on estimate with never a word spoken $7000! Estimates on boats mean nothing in Fl. Okay that is really really bad then it gets worse. Starter won't turn, boat yard plays around and puts a charger on it, writes bill for $300. After the boat is put in a slip I find that my Bus 1 has no AC to any outlet, the batteries are trashed and all the electronics appear dead. Boat yard wants $500 for it being in a slip, no extra charge for the sand and dirt as well as extensive coverage of pine needles. Got starter working and moved boat out of there. Survey of electrical and electronics damage in excess of $26,000, and that brings me to the point of entering this thread. I am looking at replacing all the original Raymarine with new as insurance is supposedly covering all but the deductible listing it as lightning although there were no reported strikes and no other boats were damaged. I am looking at the E7D radar package and E7 MFD, EV-400 Sail system, I70 displays and new wind system, 6 Crown CR-235 GC Batts to replace the Deka 8Ds etc.. I have been trying to determine if I can use the Simrad DU-120 drive unit on the EV-400 system or not. I expect that the circuit interconnect diagram will be woefully insufficient to cover as previously stated in the thread the nickel and dime approach to connections and cabling. It also would seem to be of benefit to have a package and single manufacturer approach to smooth protocol communication. Until I get the insurance check in hand I will only do the battery replacement and everything else is on the table. I could not get to the Miami show although I think it would have answered a lot of questions. Ideas and opinions would be well received! I will certainly know this boat quite well when done as I had everything on board working perfectly except for a single power panel meter select switch after owning it for two months before it made the yard trip.

not too much to say after what you have already said.... but with that kind of luck, maybe you oughta check the bottom job and see if the paint is still adhered to it.

I know this sounds accusative, and I do not mean it as such.

But the problems you describe are much more common to an accidental crossing of 120 V ac wiring into the 12 Vdc system.

YMMV

Of the scenarios I considered that one would have seemed too dumb for experienced yard personnel to have accomplished, so much so that I didn't even think of it but it sure would help explain the quantity of damage. The question in mind is that I was seeking opinions as to what others would install within a reasonable cost point of the Raymarine line. Virtually everything was destroyed with the exception of the tank monitor and it has a few sensors out so I will be replacing all of them. I should have been at the Miami show and had a long sit down with the major players.

well sounds like you need a great big guy(wears a number 52 jumper and a number 14 shoe) to pay that bill..... if that yard was on the up an up they would have contacted you about the over runs ......were you wearing your presidential rolex when you talked to them in person ...as for the replacements sit down and assess what you really need in the way of instruments and take the kiss approach ...then do your shopping or maybe even contact SBO with your total replacement needs and get them to quote you a bulk price on the total package giving them to option of filling the order complete before shipping ...sometimes a vendor will work wonders under those requirements...it never hurts to ask

It is indeed fortunate that Boat U.S. insurance stepped up without complaint so I only need worry about the deductible.I was leaning for reasons of simplicity on the idea of a vendor drafting the complete package. I am always open to ideas cause I have never had all the answers. I am also capable it is that this is a new arena and replacing or adding a single element is different then a complete overhaul. The survey of the damage and the estimate showed equipment and labor costs that were very beatable. I have already lessoned the equipment cost by over $3000 by shopping. The yard blindsided me, fool me once.......

Are you planning on allowing that yard to do any of the repair work? if they even had the slightest possibility that they were involved with initial damage?

Not a chance! Sad thing is that they are considered as one of if not the preeminent yard in the area.

it may be late advice but I do not let a yard to anything unless I am present. I also always note that they need to confer with me before exceeding estimates. A couple of quick notes on the contract, or an email to this effect is all that is required. I have never had anyone object.
