Electric Windlass Problem

I have a Muir VRC 1000 electric windlass installed on my sailboat complete with two foot actuating switches. I am frustrated because I never know if the windlass is going to work or not when it is time to raise the anchor. Frequently the windlass will run perfectly. Other times it will just click when I press either of the foot switches - and this is before the load from the anchor line comes anywhere near it. Then, without me doing anything at all, the windlass will run normally again a few days later and then do a great job raising the anchor. The previous owner suggested that he could make it work again by alternately pressing on each of the two deck level foot switches - but this technique has not so far worked for me. Any suggestions for a permanent fix?

Motor?

A friend of mine had a similar problem (different windlass). Turned out to be a dead-spot on the motor commutator. Had the motor serviced and the problem disappeared.

Possibly Worn Brushes

Brushes on my Simpson Lawrence windlass only lasted less than an hour's running. They wore so short that they only occasionally touched the commutator. Replaced the gear and all now okay
