electric vs. gasoline

Does any Mariner, or similarly sized boat, owner use an electric motor instead of a gasoline one? If so, how does it perform and what size or thrust rating is good for a Mariner? Also, curious about power consumption, choice of battery, best speed with electric, and is it as cost efficient as it looks?

Trolling motors

I tried a trolling motor on my Potter 15. It works okay for manuvering around the harbor but the power and range do not compare to even the smallest gasoline outboards. Using a small gel-cell (garden tractor size) it would drive the little Potter at 3 knots for about 30-40 minutes. I eventually gave it up because it couldn't move the boat at all into a 15 kt. headwind. I think of the trolling motor as more of an alternative to paddling than an alternative to a good outboard.

Torqeedo

Torqeedo makes a very cool electric outboard with integral battery that also folds up into a carrying case (weighs about 25 lbs) - rated for power close to 2hp. I spoke with a firm representing them (they also have a larger version) and they are working with West Marine for distribution in the next year - see them at a large boat show near you. I expect pricing to be in the $1200 - $1500 range. I found some ad copy on a web site in the UK - see related link.Maybe something to look into...Trevor

gasoline it is

Thanks for the replies, gassoline it is, for safety number one. Number two, sounds like it'll cost me about the same to get the electric set up, as it will small gas powered. Hang in there until spring!John
