My Lewmar two speed winch is making some strange noises under load. It doesn't sound like it was when new. ( but then neither do I )
Any thoughts as to what to do?

Don, good point. It has been about nine years. But used on Lake Michigan where our seaso is only four to five months per year.

You're overdue for sure. Our electric Lewmar halyard winch needs twice the love as our other winches. And if it goes, the three parts you need for the re-build run a cool 400 bucks.

My son sails there now and it has been his experience the winches get more dirty in the off season. There are lots of how-to videos showing step by step directions if you are unfamiliar with the process, one of which is on the Lewmar site.

For what its worth, before I took my winches apart, I taped a white trash bag between the winch and the water (lifeline to coach top). This kept me from losing any of the small parts overboard.

It worked like a charm too. I had a spring that tried to jump for freedom. Instead, I simply picked it up and put it back in place.
