I want to mount an electric trolling motor just to give me a kick to move when I'm fishing in the late evening and early morning before the wind picks up. Thought of mounting it to the right of the motor with an extension on the transom or on the rudder. Under sail, it would be stowed in the cabin. Battery placement, I thought in the starboard cockpit locker or in the gas can compartment inside a battery box. I have never smelled gas and since that space in wide open, a battery with good solid connections I don't think there would be problem. Please give me some feed back. I still have my primary kicker a 5hp.

I'll listen for the boom

you have never smelled gas... What did the farmer say when his horse died? "Funny, never did that before!" You only need a little vapor and a teensy spark, then that first time will be the last time... Don't do it.

Should work

The back compartment on my 240 has an 18" square opening and another hatch just above the 6gal tank. It is totally ventelated so should pose no issue with some distance between the batt and fuel tank. There aren't many bass/power boats that don't store the batt and fuel below in areas only vented with a blower. A bigger issue for me is adding more weight to the starboard side that is already overweight. Maybe cure both concerns by moving the regular batt and the trolling batt to the port side behind the aft bunk. Tough to get to but isolated and much better weight distribution. Secure them both very well. Mine were barely tied down. Aloha Michael and Kelli

i agree with Chris

After 26 years in the fire service and having seen what a gasoline explosion can do, I would have to agree with Chris. I was taught at the academy as a rookie that a gallon of gasoline has the same expolsive potential as 7 sticks of dynamite, but a lot easier to set off. Arc potential and gasoline vapor potential should not be in the same compartment.
