I have a Macgregor 22 that I'm interested in sailing on a huge reservoir near my house. Unfortunately, the county does not allow gasoline motors to be used in the reservoir as it is utilized for drinking water for residents. Does anyone know what the largest HP electric outboard might be? I need to replace my 4hp motor anyhow, so I'm thinking about switching over to electric.

Are you just day sailing?

Around the Phoenix AZ area, there are a lot of man made lakes (ponds) reasonably large. Each home owner has his dock and pontoon boat and all are electric powered. The motors are 24-volt and powerful, but use lots of electricity. My son has a 27-ft pontoon we use for bass fishing and all we use is a small WalMart electric motor to go in and out of coves. We also have six batteries and the gas engine.

Your limitation is the battery. It will move the boat as long as you are not fighting wind and current.

Yes, we are just daysailing (for now) The boat itself is really not that heavy -- I just need it to motor in and out of the dock and to get back home if there is no wind. The resevoir is 1,700 acres so I would never have REALLY far to go.

Search under Torqueedo, they make more powerful motors that the standard fishing type, also more efficient so you can get away with less battery power /weight for a given range.

I'm surprised they only allow electric - we have a number of reservoirs here in CA, and they require a 4-stroke for access. From what I understand, theiri issue is the oil contaminating the lake.
If you have a chance, you mihgt want to check out some of the CA regs, and see if these engines would work out in your area.
Just a thought...

I had a 19 ft flying scot until this spring. I used a trolling motor to get me away from the dock. It was very light weight , and had enough power to do the job. I used a large used motorcycle battery for power . Never a problem.
I have been wondering if some of the 26 ft sailors have ever tried this out for lake boats???
