I have a Hunter 216 which comes with a four HP Nissan gasoline outboard. This motor does not gear down to very low speed without stalling, and this of course makes getting back into my slip difficult. I have been thinking of getting an electric motor but wonder whether I might have the same problem with stalling at very low speeds. Anyone out there with experience with an electric motor on a small boat?

Sounds like you may wish to clean your carburetor. Perhaps running some SeaFoam fuel additive through your next tank of gas might help if its just sludge blocking the idle carb jet. I don't know anything about electric motors.

I agree, fouled carburetor low speed circuit.. That engine should run at a "tick over" kind of idle with no problem.
To answer your question, an electric motor can be pulsed on to provide a very slow speed if necessary.. Most can be slowed down considerably, then for slower speed, pulse for as long as necessary.

What already said needing to clean the carb low idle jet,I tried cleaning my outboard when it started giving me problems running and in the past I did clean all the jets and than it ran good for 2 years but this time no good.
i took t a repair after me having no luck and he said he found dirt in the jets but it ran but not as good as I remember it running years past and I had to fine tune it my self for the low speed with the one screw on the carb and I now alway add sea foam to my gas tank.
If you can charge them up easy have heard a few good good things about electric outboards.

You might try taking the drain screw out on the bottom of the carb. I had this problem on my Nissan and found water in the carb. I also found with the integral tank on top of the motor that it was prone to condensation buildup leading to water in the carb. The answer to this for me was a remote tank. No problems since I did this.
If you frequent some of the outboard oriented forums, they pretty much all recommend running the carb dry after each day - disconnect the hose (or close the petcock if you have one) and let it run til it dies. I also use Stabil regularly, and occasionally Seafoam. On my 8HP Honda, the low speed jet is easy to remove from the top of the carb, and whenever I have that "won't idle, or won't easily start without too much throttle" issue, I pull the jet and clean it with a think plastic "wire, and then carb cleaner, and it makes a big difference.
What many tend to forget that gas is an oil byproduct which will coagulate over time thus clogging the jets in the carburetor. Now with ethanol or what I call corn crap, it clogs the jets faster. When I was a dealer, I told my customers to always run the fuel out of the carb to avoid this. Now with the ethanol, if you cannot get straight gas, then make sure you get the additive to add to the gas to help stabilize the ethanol. At the end of the season, get rid of the gas in your gas tank and the jerry can as well in addition to running the fuel out of the carb.
