I have a 9.9hp Johnson that failed me Saturday night. I would like to get an electric motor as a backup. What is the best one for use on a 23 O'day? Tx for your help. Yves

i have used a 32 pound minnkota on my mac 23 and mirage 236 to get by. on a lake there is no problem. problem comes with tides and cross winds, would recommend the 50/55 pounder minn kota, and a deepcycle battery and power prop.

Beware of trolling motors
I don't know what is the best but as a Venture 2-22 owner (about 2000 lbs) I can tell you a 42 lb thrust motor isn't adequate. You'll ant something bigger. It's enough on calm, non-current days but it will not do jack squat if there's the smallest breeze or current. Just sharing my misfortune so you don't have to learn the hard way.

on dead calm and in/out of marina
Exactly when there is wind, I get withing 200' of marina entrance, lower the sail than motor in. Last Saturday the lake was like oil no movement whatsoever, 500' in 60 minutes before calling the club to get someone to tow us back.
