Peggy - Was hoping you could give some input on my "new" Jabsco electric head. Just got the boat this weekend, and coming from the world of small-boats, I was used to the "push-pull" of my sealand porta-potty. I've been on boats with a manual pump, "turn, pump wet, turn pump dry". The head on my boat has a switch, rotate clock-wise, an electric pump pumps wet, rotate counter clock-wise, electric pump dry. My real question for you is that the pump seems QUITE noisy, as in I'm sure the folks in the next slip know everytime we flush. And forget using it in the middle of the night without waking the boat. Is this normal and something that we need to get used to? Or is there potentially an issue with the pump? I'd even consider going to a manual pump, if a retrofit was available. I don't have a model number with me, but I'll be back on the boat this weekend and can get that info. Thanks again for the sharing of your knowledge. T J ps - Ran right out and got some K.O. for it, plan on keeping things maintained per your recommendations.

Sounds like the Jabsco 29200 conversion

If the pump is a vertical cylinder sitting next to the bowl, that's what it is. Jabsco designed it replace only the pump on a manual toilet...it mounts on the same base. To be sure, check it against the photo on the Jabsco site: http://www.jabsco.com (then work your way through marine to electric toilets). It IS noisy. It also draws a whopping 26a/flush (most raw water electric toilets only draw 16). You could try mounting the toilet on 1/2" of sound deadening foam, but because the foam would be exposed to ANY moisture, that's likely to create more problems than it solves It would be easy to convert the toilet back to manual...you'd only need a new pump assembly. The downsides to that solution are, it would have to be Jabsco pump assembly to fit and the pump assembly alone costs as much as you can usually find a whole new toilet on sale. If you really can't live with the noise, I suggest you pull the whole thing out and put it on eBay and replace it with a good quality manual. A Raritan PHC (same pump as the PH II, but on a compact base) would cost you about $200...you can prob'ly get more than half that amount for your toilet.

Right on the head . . .

No pun intended. (Ok, maybe a little.) That's the culprit. I'm assuming for now that we'll keep what's in place, at least for the short term. Power isn't too much of a problem, the boat has a decent battery setup, and we will very rarely be away from shore power for more than a day or two tops. I'll probably wait until the noise finally gets on my Mrs's nerves and let HER make the decision to replace it. Much easier to get the funding approved that way. Thanks again Peggie. T J Furstenau
