Hi I currently have a 6hp outboard engine that isnt very reliable. I was looking to get a new outboard but wanted to look into a electric one first. I saw one somewhere (but cant seem to find it again) that mounted on the bottom of the boat and recharged itself while you where sailing, does anyone have any experiance with this or others? Also does anyone know where to find one on the internet? I just cant seem to find it again. Thanks -Jeff Sweet Trade H23

Consider...

the weight of the batteries for you to have any real range. This is an idea that is coming for larger boats that will combine a generator with batteries, an inverter, charger, and electric propulsion, but if you need much range and/or serious thrust to overcome tides, currents, distance, you're going to be out of luck on a small boat.

Large trolling motor and batteries

If you are a sailer who sometimes motors electric should be a viable option. Throw in a solar panel to help recharge the batteries. I have a diesel and though it has saved the day several times I hate the noise and stink. Gasoline storage is a real safety concern. When my diesel dies it will probably be replaced with an electric motor system. Maybe with a small generator for emergency use. The only downside is that I will have to be more of a sailer. No motoring all day when the wind dies. I read a story about a woman who sailed from Australia to North Carolina without a motor of any kind. Now when we sail a typical day involves 20 minutes of the motor running in and out of the slip..maybe a little more if the wind dies. Most of my expense in sailing seems to revolve around diesel problems.
