I am negociating the purchase of a Hunter 260 without a trailer. A trailer maker in Houston says he has a used one for me but it has electric brakes on one axel. I gave him all the specks on the H260. I have heard that surge brakes are better for a boat trailer. I would appreciate any comments on this. I need the trailer bad. He is asking 2,400 bucks for the trailer and says it is in top shape. What do you think about that price? I did not know that electric brakes were on any boat trailers. But the more I study this the more I know I don't know. Thanks for any help or advice. Tip

Have you priced

the standard Hunter trailer? Hunter can tell you where they come from, call em and price it. $2,400 sounds high for a non-stock trailer. You want the right thing to be hauling this boat around, it ain't light.

I'd steer away from this guy if he wants to sell you a boat trailer with electric brakes. The reason electric brakes are not used on boat trailers is that the water does nasty things to them - especially salt water. Your rig will weigh well over 5000lbs. You'll want some help slowing it down at 65mph. Your vehicle brakes probably won't be up to it.

My opinion

The standard trailer new is somewhere around $4000.00 and you cannot buy it from anyone but Hunter. Electric brakers are fine, they have greater stopping ability than surge brakes and there is never the possibility of getting stuck when you need to backup uphill. Just be sure to unplug the brakes before you back the trailer into the water!

There are electric brakes out now designed for salt water boat trailers. These are good folks to deal with and are happy to answer all your questions even if you are not buying a trailer from them. http://www.championtrailers.com/

Trailer

Having just bought a new H260 with trailer, I can tell you that it's a Magic Tilt unit. Cost me about $3750 new. It's a good unit and you'll need the extendable tongue unless you always launch at steep ramps. Don't know if Magic Tilt would sell you a trailer or not. Be sure whatever you get supports the boat adequately or you'll dent it or worse. I've included a link to Magic Tilt...

Surge or Electric

I'm sorta in the same boat(no pun intended). I have a trailer but the brakes need to be replaced. I'm thinking of going with electric brakes coated with "sharkskin". Check them out on Champion Trailer web page. One of the reasons I'm staying away from surge brakes is because I read that they are illegal in some states. I also like the idea of being about to activate the brakes on the trailer manually if fishtailing starts to occur. Good Luck Mark
