A photo would help.

Hunter may have a had a better idea and used a butane stove, however, most builders used alcohol, propane or LPG. ome after market installations used alcohol.

Dave, the only butane powered units I have seen are single or double burner counter top units, not built in’s.

Looking at some literature for that model, I see that they were fitted with a stove that had one electric plate (flat, solid cast iron looking), and one gas burner. The literature stated "butane", so I am guessing one of the butane canisters underneath in a holder???
Looks like a removable cover by the gas valve. The canister is probably under that cover?

Both are used for heating stoves. Propane has a lower boiling point than butane so it will continue to convert from a liquid to a gas even in very cold conditions, down to -45ºC. When the fuel needs to be stored for a long time, propane is a better choice than butane.
Propane gas cylinders contain considerably greater pressure than Butane cylinders and as a result, regulators are designed for use with either Propane or Butane and are not interchangeable because of their different design pressures and the different connections on the cylinder itself. I doubt you will be able to find and fill butane bottles easily.
We had an electric stove aboard for ten years, so every time we wanted to heat something other than in the microwave, we'd have to start the genset. Boy, is that a PITA, and electric burners are not nearly as controllable as gas. No proper chef would cook on an electric stove.

Butane canisters come in different but limited sizes for portable stoves, hiker camping stoves, chef torches and for filling lighters. The good part is that each has different connecting assemblies. The one most used for portable cooking stoves is the tall bottle type 8" high and 2.5" in diameter with a hat looking coupler on top. They will usually rest in cradle with a slide mechanism that will push the canister into a tight seal connector. The ones used by hiker stoves are usually shorter, fatter and have a screw in connection. Find where the cannister is connected to the stove and that will tell you which cannister to use, They can be found at Walmarts, West Marine ($$$) or a cheap bundle at flea markets. We have experienced some flare ups with the flea market ones so its best to avoid them. For those looking for stoves Kenyon makes a quality one but there are many chinese cheap clones out there that should be avoided.
