Ran out of rum in the BVI's once. Poor planning or a really good time I don't recall which. Found a guy who said he could get me some quick. 10 minutes and $5 later we had a gallon milk jug full. I don't remember how good it was, but it was gone when we left 2 days later. Just say'n

True story. Pirates drank rum because Kentucky hadn't been invented yet. So there was no bourbon. If pirates had had bourbon, there would be a Jolly Roger flying over the White House right now. :dancing:
It went up Jan 20.

Have tasted most of the rums made in the Caribbean but have to admit I had never heard of El Dorado or the Guayana distillery. Years ago a 12 year old rum was considered a premium drink but nowadays everyone is cranking out 21 year old stuff. In the past premium rums originated in Barbados, Cuba or Puerto Rico and the other Islands were considered to produce 2nd tier stuff some only suited to clean your driveway. Still remember some 35 years ago Cruzan Rum at $1 a fifth in St Thomas. Nowadays with modern processes all it takes is an adequate investment to set a up a distillery in a tax haven and produce a quality product. The advertisement indicates El Dorado 21 is a blended rum and I wonder where the different blends may originate from. I particularly do not like spiced rums and my favorite mixer is plain tab water. The Brittish used to call it "grog". I have a 21 year old bottle of Mount Gay from Barbados but that is a sipping rum, it would be a waste to dilute it with water or have more than one or two drinks. That was a fine gift so enjoy.

A tasting for sure can be arranged. Come one come all!

For some reason RUM was the party gift of choice. Along with the ubiquitous Mt Gay, I scored 2 bottles of Plantation 5 year. I thought THAT was amazin', until I poured a sip of the El Dorado. Maybe the crew is trying to help me raise my rum game. Whatever the reason, I'm OK with it!

It was interesting the all the rum was brought by guys. All the gals brought nice wine.

jackdaw, sounds like you are a gracious host, and your crew has figured out to gift what they would like to drink that night.... :O) and apparently one of your crew has expensive but reportedly fine taste in rum.

My Admiral introduced that stuff to my boat last year-it doesn't hang around long. They have other years of aging also that is not so expensive.

Speaking of rum... this was filmed on our boat. A commercial for rum. It's actually a thesis for USC film school by the nephew of a friend. Came out pretty good for all the typical chaos that goes on during these productions.

Same thing is happening in the single malt and bourbon industries. Have you seen the prices? Single Malts? They don't mean single barrel They are free, under the law, to blend different whiskies from the same distillery to attain a consistent product. And there is a system of trading with other distilleries. So single malts are pretty close to being blended anyway. There are so many varieties of bourbon, in name, and in technique, aging it's very hard to tell about value. Small barrel, small batch, straight. And there are the small craft distilleries, who start out as marketing entities since it takes a while to produce real product. And that might not be any good. But it takes years to find out.
There's a book, Tasting Whiskey, written by Lew Bryson who writes about .... whiskey. It's a very interesting book the covers the making of whiskey, the business of whiskey, the politics of whiskey making, history of whiskey, the unique regions of whiskey making and a lot more. Rum is a spirit but I don't think it's a whiskey. Whiskey has to be made from grain and aged in wood barrels.
So I'll keep tasting and see if I can sort it out. And, of course, report my findings.

I do accept a wide range of currencies (scotch, bourbon, rum, sailboat rides, splicing lessons, etc.).
I can say that sailboat rides with Jackdaw onboard Blue J are a wonderful treat. While Lake Minnetonka is beautiful, I don't recommend purifying yourselves in its water unless it's warm summertime. Or you drink lots of rum first.

Just a few dumb questions. How can a company that started brewing in 2002 produce a 21 year old rum? That must be some kind of time machine. How can new start up companies be marketing 21 year old product if they just started up? Went to see the Woodford Bourbon distillery last fall and was disappointed to find that their prices at the distillery were higher than at retail liquor stores. Pretty good bourbon though. Who has visited that old Callwood rum distillery on Tortola with the 400 year old still where you can get like 5 shots for a few bucks in their tasting room?

Been to Callwood's a few years back, but didn't have the courage to do a tasting. Place looked a little primitive but was fun to see. Also have been to Woodford plus about 6 other bourbon distilleries (Kentucky Bourbon Trail) plus the two Tennessee whiskys (Jack and George). Those are all pretty places to visit, tastings are mostly free but limited, but they are not going to undercut pricing of their distributors or retailers, too much money to be made in that business.

Come to think of it, I've also been to Mt. Gay and Jameson. Maybe I have a travelling problem?

oops, forgot about Four Square and St. Nicholas Abby on Barbados and a bunch of scotch whisky distilleries. I guess I do have a travelling problem.

Isn't Jack Daniels produced in a dry county?

It is, but on our last visit they were selling bottles in their store that happen to have a free brown liquid inside. Apparently the county could not resist the lure of sales tax revenue and came up with this loophole, wink wink.

Jack Daniel and George Dickel are only 15 miles apart, easy to tour both on a nice day if you are in the area.

I received a bottle of 12 year old El Dorado for Christmas. I'm still nursing my seven fathoms, so haven't opened it yet. I am looking forward to it though.
El Dorado makes a cream rum as well. Pretty much just like Bailey's but has rum instead of whisky, so it's much better;-) it creams up coffee quite well.
