Manatee River

The Manatee River is to the south of Egmont Key. Keep it in mind if the wind picks up. I pass one of the red markers on the wrong side to get in. I think it is the second one. During the day you can see it as shoaled up in the marked channel at the marker, but it is deep to the "right" of the marker.

nice place to vist but...

Egmont is a nice place to visit but not a good one to stay at. I personally have pulled off 6 boats from the inside south end of egmont key. It really looks inviting and lots of people anchor out there, but if the winds pick up, lots wind up running the engine half the night or risk ending up on the beach. There is lots of current. The outside is worse. so go enjoy egmont key the go back up the manatee, or South into the intra coastal to find a place to lay up for the night.

manatee is closer

I have anchored at Egmont key overnight but with very little protection from the winds it made for a beautiful but uncomfortable night. {Fun memories tho}. I agree with the others that the Manatee river is a good place to drop anchor after a day at Egmont key but there is not much to do there unless you go up river to the marinas. Another idea would be to follow the intercoastal north and anchor at Gulfport in St Pete. It's a bit further than the Manatee and you'll need to open a couple of bridges but I found Gulfport to be a neat place to go to. They have a dingy dock, resturants and bars and music. It's easily done from Apollo Beach with a few hours at Edmont to explore. If you do try Gulfport be sure to leave your anchor light on all night. Tickets are a sorce of income there. Enjoy your trip, it's great fun building memories. Jack PS. Dont' try Terra Ceia Bay without local knowledge. SHALLOW ENTERANCE!!

also

Another place to overnight after a day at Egmont is just inside Longboat key bridge on the intercoastal. Just south is a great place to spend the night with 10' water. Just 300 yards off Moores Restaurant. go for drinks and dingy back..... not dingy friendly by the way. Mar Vista is right there as well.

be aware of the shipping traffic too

There are wicked currents on the south side of Egmont, and are prone to the incoming and outgoing shipping traffic. Not the best place to overnight, been there, done that.
