Backing up

From your message I'm not sure if the boat isn't backing up at all, or if it backs up and lacks directional control. I have an O'Day 27 with an A4 and a folding prop. I wouldn't say that I have no control, but would describe the boat's handling in reverse as "sluggish". I tend to put it in reverse long enough to start moving and then pop it into neutral. The A4 provides adequate power at idle speed, so it's simply a matter of slipping it in and out of reverse as necessary. With the motor in neutral and the prop not spinning, the directional control is quite good. Good Luck!
