I sail a smallish lake in Nebraska, and recently I was told by “Lake Security” that sailboats were NOT allowed to sail after dark. I was informed that “according to the Coast Guard regulations ALL boats are to motor only after sunset.” I wish I had a camera to capture his surprise when I handed him MY copy of the Coast Guard regulations and asked which section that would be under. Oh he ment that it was a State regulation. Again I excused myself, went below, retrieved my copy of the Nebraska Game and Park Boating Regulations, handed it him and asked for the section that related to NO SAILING AFTER DARK. By now I could see his frustration. Now he just said “Well it’s just not SAFE to have you out here after sunset.” I informed him that the three power boaters had the SAME lights on that I had on, and that when time came that I start the auxiliary and became a powerboat that I would indeed turn on my steaming light and at that time I would have MORE lights on than the power boaters. His patience must have been as short as his training and I was told that if I didn’t lower my sails and MOTOR back to the marina that I would not only be sighted for all of the boating vilations I would also be charged with “other criminal infractions.” Since I had already missed the sunset and the wind had died to nil I complied. The following morning I went to see the Lake Security director and informed him that this was the LAST time I will be harassed off the lake. I showed him all the literature and regulations that allowed me to sail whenever I desire. I have had NO problems since. I guess education is the key that unlocks many doors

Small power, small minds

Give a jerk a little power and he thinks he rules the world. You did the right thing by answering all his idiotic charges at the time. Better still to tell his boss. Wish I could have been there!!

As a retired law enforcement officer,,,

this shows that you get what you pay for. (not much I'll bet) This type of jerk is also why new hires have to pass probation. (storm troops need not apply)

Ya pays peanuts, ya gets monkeys...

Nice to know that your tax dollars are going to pay for such a well informed little monkey, isn't it? Heck, I think I would have wanted the little creep to write me a ticket just so I could have had the fun of getting in front of a judge with this real-cop wanna-be and having the charges thrown out!

After dark

How rediculous, our best sailing here in Texas is after dark, especially when it's 100+ in July/August. Me thinks your local "officials" don't have a clue about what they're talking about!!!

Probably this poor guy

was just following orders from farther up the line. That's no excuse for his ignorance and attempts to misrepresent national and state regulations, however. I'll bet it worked on most "offenders." Thanks for standing up for sailors.

Gotta have 'Lake Security'

You have to have 'Lake Security', otherwise a bunch of people might just get together and try to steal the lake! You could show up and find nothing but a big muddy hole in the ground! Then how would you feel? Remember, they're from the government and they're here to help! Keep your sails full and your beer cooler fuller, Jeff
