After removing the nut, my boat wheel will not come off. Even with stronger methods like tapping with wood and mallet. I'm trying to remove it to get to the Simrad Autopilot which recently stopped working. Any tricks to remove wheel. I've had it off before and it came off easily. Thanks for any suggestions. ...is that the key may be stuck in the keyway, and holds the wheel in, too. I saw this happen on a Southern Cross one time, but don't know how the owner eventually removed it. I think that if you can't determine how to get it out, then check with a marina who has possibly experienced this problem before. Also, good luck on the Simrad. Unfortunately, I haven't heard too many good things about them. I understand that they were also purchased by another company recently.

PB Blaster and a rented gear puller form the auto parts store. It may be possible to get a large C-Clamp behind the wheel, pushing on the shaft and pulling on the wheel too. PB Blaster should really help though..

Here's how I got the wheel
off on my Bene 40. I always take the wheel off if not actually steering the boat since that 42incher gets in the way. Brake lock off, mine was thru the center, locking nut off. Crow bar behind it, using a piece of rubber so as not to mar the binnacle finish and put steady pressure on it while at the same time, (two-man operation) tapping all around the hub with a brass drift and a big ball-peen hammer, tap-tap, move the crow bar, tap-tap, move the bar, and on around three or four times but it did break free. it was corroded on.

I used a big wheel/gear puller
borrowed from a local unit of one of the large auto parts chains. I don't think my wheel had been off for 20 years and no amount of tapping, prying and banging was going to get it off without damaging something. Just make sure you get a big enough puller. I think that's really the way to go.

I had exactly the same problem.
I tried everything in the book and nothing worked. I eventually borrowed a wheel puller and it came off. To make sure this does not happen again, I cleaned the hub with paint thinner and then applied some anti-seizing compound purchased at an auto parts store. The wheel puller is the way to go. Just go slowly. Good luck.

Rick: We had the same problem on our Hunter 36. I just used WD40 and let it soak for a while. Then try wiggling the wheel. If your is really stuck after this, you may need to use a wheel puller. When you reinstall it clean it well and remove the rust and crud. Lube it up with with Super-lube teflon grease. I take mine off on a regular basis now and it has not been a problem ever since.
