I put a 1980 O'Day 28 away at the dock in November, and came back over 2 months later and it seemed fine. However, now when when the rudder is centered, the wheel is 1/2 of a full rotation off from what it used to be. The neat knot someone knitted on the wheel to mark top dead center is now at the bottom when the rudder is centered. Steering doesn't seem any looser or different. Any ideas? What could cause something like this. The wheel only goes on on way so it cannot be on "upside down". It's an Edson wheel. I feel like something must have happened. thanks for any ideas, dave

move the knot
Dave: I know that moving the knot is sort of tongue-in-cheek but, all other things being the same I'd move the knot. Only if: With the rudder centered, all of the cables and chains at equal lengths on the steering mechanism and no slop in the system I'd just move the knot. It does seem like a mytery but if all things are equal I'd move the knot. It is possible for the wheel shaft which come out of the bearing and attaches to the chain gear to have come loose from the gear. Good luck and post what you find out from Edson.
