Hunter 466 Mexican Maya Riviera
We have an Edson rack and pinion steering in our Hunter 466 and the brake is not functioning anymore after we left it tight while cruising from Panama through the Caribbean into the Mexican Maya Riviera where we are located.
I cannot find the details of the installation and or replacement of such a brake and the only instructions I see a resemblance to our system is the CDi Steering Mod. 464 even though it appears located on top of the gear and ours appears to enter the area below the main gear (the flat horizontal 4-5" one).
I also hear a metal noise when I tighten the brake and release it. Location of the instructions on how to take it apart and replace the pads or whatever brakes the steering would be great.:)

Thanks Don. I will contact them.

On the other hand, being in Mexico (south of Cancun) with the boat does not make it easy to get any work done so I will need specific instructions on how to take the steering apart to get to the brake unit. Our boat has a fiberglass pedestal mount and I can get to the top portion of the steering, but not much space left to use tools and to take steering apart. It looks like the brake that we have goes into a small diameter hole into the steering metal unit covering the shaft. I am handy, but without proper assistance I do not want to venture into taking it apart and disabling the boat.

Thanks again and if you ever want to do some sailing in the Mexican Caribbean, let me know.

2nd reply. The EB405 that you attached seems to be the system that I have with the modification of a larger pedestal cover casing and the welding of a bicycle style sproket in the back connected via a chain to the Raymarine autopilot motor located in the back of the steering and covered by the fiberglass pedestal housing.

Unfortunately, it does not show how to replace or fix the brake collar; it appears that I may have to remove the 360 rack gear and shaft to get to it.

I am contacting Edson to see if there is an easier way to do it; I would not venture on taking the gear shaft off on my own to get to the brake.

Thanks again, I have spent considerable time searching the data base of Edson and did not find such unit until you pointed it out to me.

Glad to help but I have a feeling that, once you call Edson to speak with the steering gear folks, you will be all set. Just make sure you get the "right" person - they make these and will be able to describe the lest difficult process to access the brake. Good luck.
