I have a 1996 Hunter 29.5. The Edson Radial drive wheel needs to be replaced. This drive wheel is what controls the steering and is found on most Hunters aft of the helm under the large removable floor board of the cockpit. The cables go around this drive wheel and cross under the helm to a chain The drive wheel itself is bolted together and is split in two halves. When the halves are bolted together they fit around the rudder post. My first question is has anyone out there replaced one of these on their own? It does not look too complicated. My next question : Does this drive wheel hold the rudder post and the rudder itself in the boat ? In other words do I need to support the rudder when I disassemble the drive wheel? Any advise or information will be greatly appreciated---Thanks-------Clint

Ask Hunter

I would think hunter might help you if you don't get any other help on this forum, I have had pretty good results from them when asking for help. nick

Probably not. . .

necessary to support the rudder when removing the radial wheel. Do you not see a bearing supporting the rudder? It would look like a collar around the shaft riding on separate surface. At least that is how my H37C rudder is supported. When I first bought the boat I filled out a form requesting an Edson catalog. They sent the catalog and included the actual H37C installation diagram. It shows how the rudder is installed complete with all the Edson part numbers for steering. You could try that. However I am sure another 29.5 owner will have the experience to tell you exactly how to replace the radial wheel.
