We have an Edson radial drive system in our Catalina 30. Recently, it has developed quite a bad squeak. I’m pretty sure the problem is not coming from the chain. The squeak seems to be coming from the area where the rudder post connects to the disc (the area where you insert the emergency tiller). I loosened the wire that hugs the “disc” and cleanedlubricated the disc with no results. I want to remove the radial drive from the rudder post, but I am not for sure which bolts should be removed. There is 4 bolts (2 on either side) that seem to be holding the disc on ? Another longer bolt seems to be going thru the rudder post itself. Can I safely remove these to try to access the underside of the disc without causing damage ? I surely don’t want the rudder to fall off and sink either (although this is a remote possibility). Does anyone have experience with these systems ? One more note – about a month before the squeak started the line that drains the steering box clogged and water was standing in the box. I unclogged the line when I cleaned and lubricated the disc. Could this have caused my steering problem in the first place ?
